Guides
How life insurance actually works, written for someone who has never bought it and is slightly suspicious of the process. Every claim about regulation or procedure is sourced, and every guide carries the date it was last reviewed.
20 published. More are being added — the sections below show what is coming, rather than hiding the gaps.
Underwriting
What actually happens to your application once you submit it. The least-explained part of buying insurance, and the part where accuracy matters most.
- What an underwriter actually looks at The eight things that decide whether your life insurance application is accepted, altered or declined — and which of them you can still do something about.
- Why applications get loaded or declined The real reasons an insurer offers altered terms or refuses cover, what each outcome actually means, and what you can do at each point — including after a decline.
- Section 45 and the three-year mark The provision that limits how long an insurer can question your policy — what the three years run from, what an insurer must prove, and why it is the strongest argument for answering honestly.
- What material non-disclosure actually means The single most common reason a life insurance claim is contested — what makes a fact material, why guessing at that yourself is the risky move, and how to fix an answer you got wrong.
- Non-medical limits, explained The threshold that decides whether you get cover on a health declaration alone or need a medical examination first — how it is worked out, and why exceeding it is not a rejection.
- What happens if you get a question wrong Practical guidance on errors in a life insurance application — how to correct one before and after the policy is issued, and what genuinely happens if a mistake is only found at claim.
Buying
Sizing cover, choosing a term, and the trade-offs between the categories.
- How much life cover do you actually need? The two standard methods for sizing life insurance, what each one misses, and why the common income-multiple rule is a sanity check rather than an answer.
- Term cover versus cover for life What you actually give up by buying a fixed-term policy, when cover lasting your whole life makes sense, and why the cheaper option is usually the right one.
- What a rider actually adds Optional add-ons to a life policy — what the common ones do, the definitions that decide whether they pay, and how to tell a useful rider from an expensive reassurance.
- What actually changes your premium The factors that decide what life cover costs — which ones dominate, which barely register, and which of them you can still do something about.
- Buying life cover with a pre-existing condition What actually happens when you disclose a health condition on a life insurance application — the range of outcomes, why disclosure is the safer move, and how to present a condition well.
- Buying life cover if you use tobacco What counts as tobacco use on an insurance application, why it moves the price so much, and why declaring it is the cheaper decision despite the higher premium.
Claims
How a claim is filed, what documents are needed, and why claims get contested.
- How a life insurance claim is filed What a nominee actually has to do to make a claim, in what order, and the practical things that make the difference between a straightforward settlement and a slow one.
- Documents needed for a life insurance claim What a nominee is asked to provide, what varies with the circumstances, and what a policyholder can put in place now to make it easier for whoever has to do it.
- Why life insurance claims get contested The actual reasons claims are questioned or refused, how often it happens, and what a policyholder can do years earlier to make sure theirs is not one of them.
- The nominee's role, and why it matters more than people think What a nominee actually is, how it differs from inheritance, why an appointee is needed for a minor, and the five minutes of admin that prevents most claim difficulties.
Buying from abroad
What changes when you apply as a non-resident — country by country, and what happens if you return.
- Buying Indian life cover as an NRI What actually changes when you apply from abroad — the extra questions, why every non-resident application is reviewed by a person, and what to settle before you start.
- Country notes for NRI applicants What tends to differ when applying from the Gulf, Singapore, the UK, the US or Australia — and why the country question has to be asked of the insurer rather than answered by a website.
- FATCA and CRS declarations, explained The tax-reporting questions on an insurance proposal form — what triggers them, what they do and do not mean, and why answering them accurately is straightforward.
- What changes if you return to India A policy bought while you were living abroad continues when you come home — what you should tell the insurer, what shifts, and what does not change at all.
How these are written
Information, not advice. These explain how things work; they do not tell you what to buy or how much of it. That distinction is deliberate — recommending carries obligations this practice is not set up to meet, so you get the reasoning and the decision stays yours.
No premium, return or maturity value appears in any of them, because those are set by the insurer at underwriting rather than by a website.
