Material non-disclosure
Also called non-disclosure.
Failing to reveal something that would have affected the insurer's decision.
A fact is material if it would have changed whether the insurer offered cover, or on what terms. Not mentioning one — whether deliberately or by assuming it did not matter — is material non-disclosure.
It is the most common reason a claim is contested. The damage lands not on the person who filled in the form but on the family making the claim, potentially years later.
