Exclusion

A circumstance in which the policy will not pay.

Exclusions are the defined situations the contract does not cover. They vary by product and by rider, and they are set out in the policy document.

Reading them is the point of the free-look period. An exclusion discovered at claim time is the worst possible moment to learn about it.
