Assignment

Transferring the rights under a policy to another person or institution.

Assignment moves the benefits of a policy to someone else — historically most often to a lender as security against a loan.

It is a formal change recorded by the insurer, and it is distinct from nomination: a nominee receives a claim, an assignee acquires rights in the policy itself.
